Bigmouth is an educational tool designed to assist children in developing their speech sound skills for spoken English. It features a friendly cartoon character that provides direct, clear guidance on producing sounds correctly. The platform incorporates engaging stories and games to make the learning process enjoyable and interactive. It is suitable for independent use by children or for guided learning with an adult.

Bigmouth Sounds v 1.0 offers several key features:

• High-quality voice recordings enable children to hear each speech sound clearly, aiding their ability to produce and differentiate sounds. All recordings are in a standard English accent.
• Includes 24 consonant and 12 vowel character cards, with sounds presented both in isolation and within words.
• Written and auditory instructions provide comprehensive guidance on how to articulate each sound.
• Contains five engaging, sound-based stories read aloud alongside illustrative picture scenes, promoting listening skills and sound repetition.
• A snap game designed for auditory discrimination: children listen to two sounds, attempt to repeat them, and receive feedback on their accuracy through Bigmouth characters, encouraging active participation.
• The app offers five progressively challenging levels aligned with typical developmental stages in speech sound acquisition, from Level 1 (easiest) to Level 5 (comprehensive coverage of all sounds).

Developed by Speech and Language Therapists Norma Ramsay and Sara Hughes, Bigmouth has been effectively utilized over many years across diverse populations—including preschool children, individuals with hearing impairments, learning disabilities, and even some adults.

The program illustrates various mouth shapes to demonstrate articulatory positions involving lips, teeth, and the front of the tongue. It clearly distinguishes between voiceless sounds (shown in light green, such as 's' and 't') and voiced sounds (depicted in dark green, such as 'z' and 'd'). A nose graphic indicates nasal sounds. Many items associated with sounds serve as visual cues to facilitate learning. Additionally, a selection of twelve vowels is included; long and short vowels are differentiated by character size to aid recognition.
